Her first task was to assess whether a safe transfer was possible, not to promise a dramatic revelation.
Emily signed a document authorizing one preservation transfer while retaining the original and all associated rights.
Ben watched Priya use cotton gloves and a magnifying lamp to inspect the exposed tape.
“My mother kept this in a dry closet for twenty-eight years,” Emily said.
“She may have done us a favor,” Priya answered.
They waited in a separate room while the technician worked.
Emily imagined hearing her mother’s younger voice and felt suddenly unsure whether she wanted that gift.
At last Priya returned with a digital file and warned that much of the recording was difficult to understand.
The first minutes contained music from a rehearsal, a conductor counting beats, and people laughing in the distance.
Then a man’s voice said a delivery truck was blocking the lower loading space.
Another voice ordered someone to move the truck before the performance ended.
The music stopped abruptly.
A woman asked whether the south doors had been unlocked after the new hardware was installed.
A man responded that the doors were secured to prevent unauthorized entry during the gala rehearsal.
“Secured how?” the woman asked.
The answer dissolved into a burst of static.
A few seconds later, Anna Carter’s voice could be heard calling for the house manager.
She repeated that the exit handles would not turn.
The recording ended with a scraping sound and an adult voice telling the children to stay away from the smoke.
Emily gripped the edge of the table.
She had heard her mother speak with urgency many times, but never with that kind of fear.
Priya muted the speakers and offered everyone a moment before discussing technical details.
Nora said the recording appeared to challenge the old report, though the identities of the other speakers still required verification.
Samuel stared at the empty screen.
“Marion kept saying somebody gave an instruction that should never have been given,” he said.
Emily asked who had control of the new door hardware.
Nora did not answer immediately.
The construction supervisor listed on the building permit was Walter Langford, Victoria’s uncle.
The discovery did not establish that he had caused the fire or knowingly endangered anyone.
It did establish that people had been asking about the locked exit before the emergency began.
Chapter 10: A Letter That Never Arrived
Nora brought Emily a copy of a letter her mother had sent to the trust in 2004.
