CHAPTER SIXTEEN E: THE FIRST OPEN MORNING
On a quiet Sunday, Mark opened the sliding door before breakfast and let fresh air into the kitchen.
The pear tree moved gently in the breeze.
He carried his coffee outside and sat on the patio step.
Across the street, the Parker house remained quiet.
A delivery truck passed without stopping.
Mark watched it turn the corner and felt no need to follow its route.
He had spent months learning that a few minutes of recording could reveal an important event without explaining every life connected to it.
He had also learned that his home could be damaged by someone else’s fear and still become a place where he felt safe again.
When Claire arrived, she found him carrying two plates to the patio table.
“You’re eating outside?” she asked.
“The weather is good,” Mark replied.
Claire looked at the new glass and then at the tree.
“Your dad would have liked this,” she said.
Mark nodded and pulled out a chair for her.
They ate breakfast while the neighborhood woke around them.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN: A NEW DOOR
By early spring, Mark’s sliding door had been replaced.
The new glass was clear enough to reflect the pear tree beside the patio.
A restitution payment covered the repair, although it did not erase the morning Helen entered his home.
Martin moved into a small apartment while he and Helen decided what their marriage would become.
They spoke occasionally, without pretending the months of fear had been a misunderstanding.
Denise returned to dispatch work for a different company.
She told Mark she now asked questions the moment a route stopped making sense.
One Saturday, Martin stopped by to return a borrowed ladder.
He looked at the new door.
“Does it still bother you when someone knocks?” he asked.
“Sometimes,” Mark admitted.
Martin set the ladder beside the garage.
“I’m glad you answered anyway.”
Mark glanced toward the street, where a delivery truck had just stopped at the next house.
He watched the driver carry a package to the porch and leave it in plain sight.
Then Mark went inside and locked the door behind him.
The End.
