The email supported her claim that Frank initiated contact, but it did not explain what the two had discussed in person.

Daniel heard about the conflicting accounts from Navarro during a formal witness interview.

He resisted the impulse to decide that Judith was lying simply because Frank had.

Judith produced a box of Bellwether programs that included a copy of the photograph Nora had preserved.

A note on the back listed Miriam Ross as the child who had challenged the director during the final concert.

The note also mentioned an accountant who refused to sign the year-end report.

That accountant was Helen Mercer.

Judith had spent years cataloging the organization’s paperwork and believed the choir’s director, Leonard Baines, manipulated donors by inventing emergency transfers for children who had not changed placements.

She had no evidence that he caused the bus crash.

She did have evidence of fraudulent reports submitted to several foundations before the crash.

Chen asked her why she had not approached authorities earlier.

Judith said she had, but nobody wanted to reopen a case that appeared to have ended decades ago.

Now the recovered recorder and Helen’s list created a different reason to investigate.

Daniel returned home after the interview and found Owen reading the choir program with a pencil tucked behind his ear.

“Grandma kept trying,” Owen said.

Daniel sat beside him.

“I think she did,” he answered.

He did not tell Owen that believing Helen had tried made the years of estrangement hurt in a different way.

Chapter 11 — What the Recording Heard

The recording began with footsteps and the scraping of folding chairs inside what sounded like a storage room.

Helen’s voice asked someone to confirm the bus number printed on a schedule.

A man’s voice replied that the replacement vehicle was safe and that she should stop making a scene.

Another voice, younger and frightened, said he had seen the same man moving luggage out of the depot during the previous trip.

Simon identified the boy tentatively as Aaron Bishop but told the detective he could not be certain after so many years.

There was a pause and a burst of static before Helen asked whether the children had been counted.

The man said every child was accounted for.

Helen answered that there were two names on the travel list who were not present.

The recording ended with a door slamming and a sound like the recorder being moved into a pocket.

It did not prove sabotage.
