By Friday, her log contained dates, contacts, and unresolved questions.
It was not dramatic to look at.
It was the first record of her experience that nobody else had written for her.
Chapter 26: The Missing Payment
Melissa was discharged with follow-up instructions and a recovery plan that required more help than she had anticipated.
Joanne invited her to stay temporarily so she would not have to manage three children and her own recovery alone.
Grant continued his parenting schedule and offered additional pickups when Joanne needed rest.
He did not ask Melissa to return to their marriage.
The missing final payment became impossible to ignore when Melissa received a notice about an outstanding medical balance.
She called the number listed on her contract and reached a private administrator named Holden Price.
Holden explained that the Whitmores were conducting a reconciliation of expenses.
Melissa asked why money promised to her had been withheld.
Holden said he could not discuss the family account without Charles’s authorization.
“The contract has my name on it,” she said.
“Then you should ask the family office,” Holden replied.
Melissa documented the call and sent the notes to Rachel.
Rachel requested a full accounting and copies of any changes to the agreement.
Three days later, she received a document bearing Melissa’s initials next to a revised payment schedule.
Melissa stared at the page.
“Those aren’t my initials,” she said.
Rachel told her not to jump to conclusions before the original records could be examined.
Grant looked at the date in the margin.
It was the same day Melissa had been admitted to the hospital.
She remembered signing consent papers for treatment, but she did not remember approving any financial amendment.
Rachel requested the original signature logs and metadata.
At the office, Andrea received instructions to retrieve Melissa’s work laptop.
She asked whether the request was related to maternity leave.
Human resources told her the company was reviewing access permissions.
Andrea called Melissa privately and asked whether she had received notice.
Melissa said no.
Andrea hesitated before saying that Charles’s office had requested copies of calendar entries involving the family arrangement.
Melissa asked her to preserve those requests.
Andrea said she would speak to counsel before taking any action.
The first time Grant heard this, he wanted to call Charles and demand an explanation.
Melissa asked him not to.
“Let my lawyer handle it,” she said.
Grant put down his phone.
It was a boundary he should have learned to respect long before the separation.
