Rachel said the meeting was not a trial and asked everyone to stay with verifiable facts.
Charles offered to release the final installment if Melissa signed a broad waiver of claims.
Melissa looked at Rachel, who asked for the proposal in writing.
There was no signature that afternoon.
After the meeting, Melissa sat in her car and shook for several minutes.
She called Grant because he was scheduled to collect the children from school.
“I met with Charles,” she said.
Grant asked whether she was safe.
“Yes.”
“Do you need me to change the pickup time?”
“No, I just needed to tell someone who remembers who I was before all this.”
Grant remained quiet while she cried.
He could not repair their marriage by listening, but he could stop making her pain another test of loyalty.
That night, Melissa wrote down every question Charles had avoided.
For the first time, she believed her own memory mattered.
Chapter 32: Three Children
The children’s routines became the one part of life Grant and Melissa could still protect together.
They agreed that discussions about lawyers, Charles, and finances would not take place within earshot of Lily, Noah, or Ben.
Grant attended Noah’s school conference while Melissa recovered from a follow-up appointment.
Melissa helped Lily prepare a science project through video calls when she could not sit at the table for long.
On Saturdays, they met at a park near the river for short visits that allowed the children to see both parents without a dramatic handoff.
The first visit was awkward because Grant and Melissa did not know where to stand.
Lily solved the problem by asking them both to hold one end of a jump rope.
They obeyed.
Afterward, Grant told Melissa that the children seemed relieved to see them cooperating.
Melissa said she was relieved too.
They began exchanging a shared calendar with medical appointments included only when they affected childcare.
Neither demanded explanations for the other’s private life.
Grant sometimes resented how much work it took to be courteous after the marriage had broken.
Melissa sometimes resented that he seemed calmer now than he had when she needed him to understand her choice.
They did not pretend those feelings disappeared.
One evening, Lily asked whether the baby Melissa had carried would ever meet them.
Melissa told her that the baby lived with Charles and Vivien and that any future contact would depend on many people’s wishes and privacy.
She said Lily did not need to solve the adults’ decisions.
