CHAPTER FOURTEEN I: THE OFFER ON THE TABLE

Cedric invited Yvette to lunch at a private club where they had once celebrated their anniversary.
She declined the invitation and proposed a meeting at her attorney’s office instead.
Cedric arrived carrying a thin leather folder and the confidence of someone who expected every room to become his.
He said he wanted to settle the marriage quietly.
Yvette asked him to speak through counsel.
Cedric offered to transfer ownership of a vacation property if she resigned from the foundation board and stopped pursuing the review.
Yvette’s attorney asked whether he was making the transfer conditional on decisions concerning a separate charitable organization.
Cedric said he was proposing a practical arrangement.
Yvette said she would not exchange the foundation’s independence for a house.

Cedric accused her of pretending to be virtuous because Damian was watching.
Damian was not present.
Yvette reminded Cedric that the foundation existed before their marriage.
Cedric said it had become important only after he gave it access to wealthy donors.
Yvette asked whether he had ever visited one of the families whose photographs appeared in the annual report.
He said he did not need to inspect every beneficiary personally.
She said nobody expected that, but someone had needed to check whether the beneficiaries received the services described.
Cedric leaned back and asked whether she intended to destroy their reputation over administrative mistakes.
Yvette replied that the people affected had reputations too.
Her attorney ended the meeting when Cedric began discussing threats against Damian’s company.
Outside, Yvette stood on the pavement until her hands stopped trembling.

She called Damian and told him Cedric had tried to bargain for her resignation.
Damian asked whether she was safe.
She said she was and asked him not to come looking for Cedric.
He agreed.
The promise cost him more effort than he admitted.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN J: A CALL FROM THE KITCHEN

Joseph Kline called Damian on a Thursday morning because his daughter had been offered a place in Keisha’s culinary program.
Joseph wanted to thank the person who had told him the unfinished warehouse could not open on time.
Damian said the placement had been arranged by the foundation’s new committee, not by him.
Joseph insisted that an honest answer had mattered because his daughter had stopped waiting for the warehouse and applied elsewhere.
Damian asked whether she liked the new program.
Joseph laughed and said she had complained about chopping onions for three straight hours.
He sounded proud of the complaint.
Damian hung up and returned to the hospital kitchen project.
Niko was waiting beside an access panel with a problem that could not be solved by anyone’s gratitude.
The existing duct opening was smaller than the dimension on the approved plan.
Damian measured it and called the engineer before his crew cut anything.
The engineer approved a revised transition after reviewing the airflow requirements.
The delay pushed the work into the evening.
Damian stayed with the crew and bought dinner when the restaurant across the road opened.
Niko asked whether he was planning to become a charity director.
Damian said he was planning to finish the hospital kitchen.
Niko smiled and handed him a wrench.
The work felt satisfying because every completed connection could be inspected.
Damian wished the rest of his life offered the same certainty.
