CHAPTER FOURTEEN AB: THE STUDENT WHO QUIT

Keisha called Simone because one of the foundation’s six students had stopped attending class.
The student, Darren, had missed three consecutive mornings and had not answered the school’s messages.
Simone asked whether she could contact him through the number he had provided for program support.
Keisha agreed and said the school wanted to understand whether the schedule had become impossible.
Darren answered on the fourth attempt.
He said his employer had changed his shifts and he could no longer reach the morning class on time.
He sounded ashamed and asked whether he would have to repay the tuition.
Simone said she would check the program terms before answering.
She arranged a meeting with Keisha and Darren the next afternoon.
Darren arrived in work clothes and apologized repeatedly.

Keisha explained that the program had an afternoon section beginning in three weeks.
She offered to transfer his place if he could commit to the new schedule.
Darren asked whether the foundation would continue covering transport.
Simone confirmed that the approved budget allowed the transfer.
Darren accepted and said he had expected to be told he was unreliable.
Keisha replied that attendance mattered, but so did understanding why someone could not attend.
Yvette learned about the meeting afterward.
She asked Simone whether the foundation should announce that it had retained all six participants.
Simone said Darren had not yet attended the new section, so the claim would be premature.
Yvette agreed.
She asked instead whether the foundation’s program rules made it unnecessarily difficult for working students to change schedules.
Simone said they needed a written procedure.

They spent the afternoon drafting one with Keisha’s input.
The work was unglamorous and important.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN AC: A FRIEND WHO CHOSE A SIDE

Damian met his longtime friend Aaron at a basketball court where they had played together since college.
Aaron had heard about the separation through mutual acquaintances.
He asked whether Damian was dating Cedric’s wife out of revenge.
Damian said the relationship had begun while both marriages were ending, but he understood why the timing looked complicated.
Aaron said people were treating the situation like a competition with a billionaire.
Damian asked whether Aaron was among them.
Aaron hesitated.
He admitted that he had repeated a joke about Damian winning a rich man’s wife.
Damian told him the joke reduced Yvette to a prize and made his own marriage sound like a sporting event.
Aaron apologized.
He said he had not thought about how it sounded because he was trying to make Damian laugh.
Damian said he knew, but he needed friends who could talk to him without turning the worst year of his life into entertainment.
They played a quiet game of basketball.
Aaron missed three easy shots and blamed his stiff knee.
Damian laughed for the first time that afternoon.
Afterward, Aaron asked whether Damian wanted to come over for dinner with his family.
Damian accepted.
They talked about Aaron’s daughter’s school play and the repair needed on the court’s broken fence.
The evening reminded Damian that friendship could continue without requiring anyone to take a dramatic public position.
