Trish swiped and tapped for nearly a minute, and the deputies simply waited.
Marcus turned to me.
I did not interrupt, and I did not argue.
I took the folded receipt out of my coat, unfolded it, and handed it to him with the flashlight beam on the top line.
He read it in silence, and passed it to Laura, who crouched beside the generator with her flashlight on the data plate.
She read the serial number from the plate aloud, one character at a time, and Marcus read the same characters from the invoice, and I heard the last four match.
The number ended in 4417.
Laura looked up and gave him a single small nod.
Mr.
Cole, Marcus said, walk me through it from the beginning.
So, I did.
I told him about the outage, the old generator that would not run, the drive-thru the drifts, and paying at the counter while Melissa Grant loaded the machine into my truck.
I told him that Trish arrived in a black SUV, that she said the machine was hers, that Mr.
Pike told her there was no order in her name, and that I asked her to leave.
I told him that a few minutes later, she came back in through my side door, raised my overhead door, and began dragging the generator toward her vehicle, that I had stepped in front of it without touching her, and that I had photographed everything.
I never once used the word thief.
I described what she did in the order she did it, and I let Marcus arrive at the words himself.
It is a discipline I learned from years of writing failure reports.
The report says the bearing failed and it does not say who is to blame for the bearing.
Laura had already stood up and she was walking the groove.
She followed it from the threshold of my garage down the driveway past the truck along 40 ft of scraped ice and packed snow all the way to the rear bumper of Trisha’s SUV.
She stopped there and shown her flashlight into the open hatch.
Then she looked back at the trail and at the machine sitting near the middle of it, and I saw her take the measure of the whole picture, the way you take the measure of a scene in a photograph.
Trish, watching her said quickly that she had only moved the machine to prove that it was hers.
If it was yours, Laura said without raising her voice, “Why did you move it?” before proving ownership.
