CHAPTER TWO — THE PRICE OF QUIET

Victoria said the envelope contained an expression of gratitude.
Khloe pulled out a cashier’s check and stared at the number printed on it.
It was fifty thousand dollars.
Her knees nearly weakened, but the next sheet stopped her from speaking.
The document required her to keep confidential everything Arthur had said or done at the diner.
It also prohibited discussion of the condition in which he had arrived.
A second paragraph asked her to agree that his whereabouts before entering the restaurant were unknown to her.
Khloe read the clause twice.
She looked at Victoria and asked why an ordinary act of kindness required a confidentiality agreement.
Victoria described the paperwork as a standard privacy measure for a prominent family.
Khloe pointed out that she knew nothing private except that a cold man had needed soup.

Victoria’s polite smile hardened.
She said the company could help with certain financial burdens if Khloe signed promptly.
Khloe wondered how this stranger knew she had financial burdens.
David moved closer, eyeing the check.
He offered his office for the transaction and called Khloe a valued employee.
Khloe asked why she was being offered fifty thousand dollars when Arthur himself had tried to give her ten.
Victoria said the family’s advisers preferred an uncomplicated resolution.
The phrase sounded rehearsed.
Khloe placed the check inside the envelope without signing anything.
She said she needed time to understand what she was being asked to promise.
Victoria closed the briefcase and told the guards to wait outside.
She asked whether Khloe realized how difficult life could become for people who misinterpreted a public figure’s private affairs.

Khloe heard the warning beneath the polished words.
She returned the envelope to the counter.
She said she could not misinterpret something she had barely witnessed.
Victoria studied her for several seconds.
Then she reached for the papers and announced that the offer would expire at noon.
Khloe asked whether Arthur had personally approved the agreement.
Victoria did not answer.
The silence hung between them until a security guard opened the door.
Victoria left the diner without touching the coffee David had hastily prepared.
David rounded on Khloe the moment the motorcade departed.
He called her ungrateful and accused her of costing him publicity.
She asked whether her suspension was still in effect.
He told her to return for the morning shift as though nothing had happened.
Khloe took the folded apron from his office and left it on the counter.
She said they could discuss her job after he provided the suspension notice he owed her.
Outside, the wind had turned the sidewalk into a strip of polished glass.
She began walking toward the station despite having no fare.
Half a block later, the man in the yellow raincoat appeared beside a parked delivery van.
He introduced himself as Leon Price and said Arthur had asked him to make sure she reached home safely.
Khloe hesitated before accepting a ride.
Leon showed her the identification for a medical transport service rather than Penhaligon Global.
That detail made her less comfortable, not more.
She asked why he had been close enough to retrieve Arthur within ten minutes.
Leon answered that Arthur had called him in advance of the emergency.
Khloe demanded to know what kind of emergency he expected.
Leon stared through the windshield for a long moment.
He said Arthur had been trying to reach somebody on a winter shuttle route and lost access to his own escort.
He added that Victoria wanted people to believe the episode was a simple medical mishap.
Khloe asked whether he was allowed to tell her that.
Leon replied that he was no longer sure whom he worked for.
At her apartment building, he handed her a transit card and refused repayment.
He said Arthur would want her to be able to get to her sister.
She took the card only after confirming it carried a modest balance rather than access to an account.
Savannah was awake at the kitchen table when Khloe climbed the stairs.
Her sister had a blanket around her shoulders and hospital paperwork spread between two mugs.
Khloe apologized for returning late.
Savannah noticed her empty lunch container and asked whether the shift had gone badly.
Khloe told her about the stranger, the suspension, and the cars outside the diner.
She stopped before describing the check.
Savannah was seventeen, but she could still read hesitation in her sister’s face.
She asked what Khloe had refused to tell her.
Khloe finally described the fifty thousand dollars.
Savannah closed her eyes and breathed out carefully.
She asked whether taking it would require Khloe to lie.
Khloe said the agreement was written as though silence and lying were the same thing.
Savannah pushed the hospital statements toward the far end of the table.
She said she would rather keep arguing with the billing office than watch her sister become frightened of her own memory.
Khloe sat beside her until dawn began thinning the darkness outside.
Neither sister slept much.
At six thirty, a woman knocked on their door carrying a paper bag of breakfast sandwiches.
She introduced herself as Mara Ellison, a local reporter.
Khloe did not let her inside.
Mara said somebody had circulated an image of the motorcade outside Ali’s Diner.
A second person had identified Arthur Penhaligon as the man brought to the restaurant.
Mara wanted to know why the billionaire had been walking alone in dangerous weather.
Khloe asked whether the reporter had spoken to Arthur.
Mara said his office was declining all questions.
Before Khloe could close the door, Mara mentioned a shuttle company named WinterBridge.
She said three passengers had reported being abandoned at a transfer point that same night.
Khloe remembered Arthur asking an unheard question over her phone.
She asked where the transfer point was.
Mara looked suddenly more interested.
She said it was near the industrial docks, less than two miles from the diner.
Khloe took the reporter’s card and closed the door.
Savannah stood behind her holding the untouched breakfast bag.
She asked whether the woman had been asking about the old man or about a bus.
Khloe admitted she could no longer separate the two.
