CHAPTER FIVE — THE COMPANY’S STORY
Victoria Kensington was waiting in Arthur’s office when Daniel arrived with the preservation notice.
She stood beside a wall of photographs showing community partnerships and smiling winter volunteers.
She accused him of turning a routine safety incident into a corporate crisis.
Daniel handed her the notice and explained that records would be preserved for independent review.
Victoria said the board would consider his actions a breach of loyalty.
Daniel replied that preserving evidence was part of his responsibility to the company.
Victoria demanded to know whether Khloe had signed the agreement.
Daniel said she had not.
Victoria looked toward the window and appeared to make a calculation.
She told him Arthur was emotionally exhausted and vulnerable to manipulation.
Daniel asked whether that explained why the agreement contained a false statement.
Victoria said lawyers often included broad language to prevent misunderstandings.
Daniel asked whose misunderstanding she had been afraid of.
Victoria dismissed him without answering.
That evening, a statement appeared on WinterBridge’s website.
It said a well-intentioned employee had misinterpreted a routine weather-related transfer.
The statement referred to one passenger who had refused an alternate vehicle.
It also claimed that the company’s services had maintained a ninety-nine percent completion rate.
Mara called Khloe to ask whether Arthur had seen the statement.
Khloe forwarded it to Daniel and asked who the unnamed employee was supposed to be.
Daniel said the reference might be to Arthur’s temporary identity on the route.
Khloe pointed out that the statement effectively blamed him for being abandoned.
She remembered Tomas’s lost shift and Beatrice’s angry hands on the church table.
Mara invited the riders to speak on camera, but Beatrice wanted a written correction first.
Khloe suggested they identify specific completed and missed trips rather than debate the company’s percentage.
Mara agreed to request dispatch records through available contract oversight channels.
Meanwhile David Hatcher called Khloe and offered to restore her weekend shifts.
He said he had always considered her one of his best employees.
She asked whether he would restore Pilar’s hours too.
David said Pilar’s schedule was a separate personnel matter.
Khloe told him the staff had heard his threats and deserved a written guarantee against retaliation.
David ended the call.
Savannah listened from the couch and said she had never heard a manager retreat so quickly.
Khloe smiled, then grew quiet.
Savannah asked whether she was afraid of losing the diner permanently.
Khloe admitted she was.
She had worked there long enough to know which customers needed a gentle conversation and which wanted silence.
She also knew the restaurant’s small staff could not afford many missed shifts.
Savannah said gratitude did not require accepting mistreatment.
Khloe wondered when her younger sister had become so good at saying difficult things.
The following morning, Beatrice called with alarming news.
WinterBridge had begun distributing letters announcing a temporary suspension of several pickup points.
The affected stops served riders who had complained most often.
A company representative claimed the changes were necessary for road safety.
Beatrice had personally inspected one location that morning and found the road clear.
Khloe photographed the posted notice but resisted drawing conclusions before she understood the route.
She called Tomas, who said his supervisor had warned him about speaking publicly.
Then she called Daniel and demanded to know whether the company could change services during an investigation.
Daniel said he would ask the independent reviewer to examine the changes immediately.
Khloe asked who had ordered the review and who would receive its findings.
Daniel explained that an outside transportation auditor had been retained and instructed to report directly to a special board committee.
She asked whether riders had been told how to submit evidence.
Daniel admitted they had not yet received instructions.
Khloe said that was unacceptable.
She proposed a public listening session at the church rather than another private meeting in a corporate office.
Arthur approved the idea within an hour.
Victoria reacted by announcing her own press conference for the same evening.
The invitations described a celebration of safe winter mobility.
Khloe recognized the tactic immediately.
If Victoria could make the official story sound settled, every rider’s complaint would become an inconvenient interruption.
She asked Mara to attend both events and decide what the evidence showed.
Mara promised coverage but refused to promise a preferred conclusion.
Khloe respected her more for that answer.
