Chapter Fifteen O: A Vendor Refuses the Stage

The following morning, Sofia Alvarez arrived at the exhibition hall to find a portable stage being assembled in the central aisle.
She stopped her bread cart beside the entrance and asked the workers who had ordered it.
The crew leader said the stage was part of a last-minute promotional appearance.
He had been instructed to place it exactly where the revised layout showed an open walkway.
Sofia went directly to Priya instead of arguing with the crew.
Priya had not approved any stage.
She asked the crew leader for the name of the person who had signed the order.
He showed her a message from Nolan’s office.
The message said the stage was required for an announcement about the market’s future.
Priya told the workers to stop assembly and leave the aisle clear.

The crew leader looked at the half-built platform and asked who would pay for the labor already completed.
Priya told him to document the hours and submit the claim to the company that hired him.
She also offered to speak to the owner if the crew needed confirmation that the cancellation was not their fault.
Sofia helped move a cart out of the workers’ way.
One of the younger crew members recognized her bakery from a previous market.
He said his mother had waited in line for Sofia’s cinnamon rolls every winter.
Sofia smiled, then asked whether he knew why the stage had been ordered.
The worker said he had been told a television crew would arrive to record a surprise announcement.
Claire entered the hall while he was speaking.

She said Nolan had once arranged a similar announcement at the first festival.
He had invited the press before vendors discovered that several booths were missing.
By the time the argument began, the cameras were already pointed at the crowd.
Nolan had presented the confusion as a spontaneous dispute among sellers rather than a failure of his own arrangements.
Priya looked toward the stage and understood what he might be planning now.
A public confrontation could make her cancellation of the extra booths appear unreasonable.
She asked the crew leader to remove the platform completely.
He hesitated because the truck was already on its way to another job.
Sofia offered to let the crew store the pieces temporarily behind her bakery cart, provided they kept the emergency route open.
The superintendent approved a temporary storage area beside the loading dock.
The workers carried the panels away without further argument.
When the last section was gone, Priya walked the aisle from one end to the other.
She measured the narrowest passage with a tape measure borrowed from the superintendent.
Claire watched her and remembered Dennis moving tables while people shouted at him.
This time nobody shouted.
A decision had been made before the crowd arrived.
Sofia returned to her cart and began arranging bread in baskets.
She said she would rather sell a hundred fewer loaves than watch someone get hurt in a rush for a stage nobody had asked for.
Priya wrote the stage incident into the day’s event notes.
She did not know whether Nolan would attempt another interruption.
She did know that the market would not be built around his next surprise.
