Chapter Fifteen AD: The Film Without a Villain’s Speech
Iris arrived at the market with Evan late in the afternoon to record the final interviews.
She had permission from Priya to film the public aisles, but she asked individual vendors before pointing the camera at their faces.
Ruth agreed to speak beside her pottery display.
Grace Ellison asked to finish a sale before answering questions.
Sofia offered to show how she packed unsold bread for the next day’s opening.
Iris recorded the work because she wanted the film to show what the market meant to the people who had built it.
She had spent so much time studying Nolan’s actions that she had almost forgotten the vendors were not supporting characters in his story.
At Ruth’s booth, she asked what the first festival had cost her.
Ruth said she had lost money, but the more lasting damage was the embarrassment of being told that her own mistake had caused the confusion.
Iris asked what had changed at the new market.
Ruth pointed to the clearly marked booth number above her table.
She said she knew where she belonged and who to ask if something went wrong.
At Grace’s booth, Iris asked whether the false cancellation message had changed her decision to attend.
Grace said she had nearly gone home but had continued after Priya confirmed the space was ready.
She held up the yellow blanket she had sold earlier and described the customer who had chosen it.
Iris filmed the empty place where the blanket had been displayed.
She liked the image because it showed that a small success could be visible through an absence.
Sofia described the unauthorized stage and explained why she had helped the crew remove it without blocking the aisle.
She said the market was supposed to be about the things people made, not a surprise speech from someone who wanted attention.
Iris recorded the comment and asked whether Sofia wanted to repeat it for clarity.
Sofia said the first version was clear enough.
Near the entrance, Iris filmed Helen Marsh moving easily through the accessible route.
Helen agreed to an interview but asked Iris not to make her the symbol of the entire event.
She wanted the route to be ordinary, not exceptional.
Iris asked what had been different at the earlier festival.
Helen described the blocked doorway and Dennis moving tables to create a passage.
She said the new organizers had listened when she pointed out obstacles.
Iris thanked her and stopped recording.
Evan asked whether she had enough material.
Iris said she had more than enough.
The difficulty would be deciding what the story needed rather than what the camera happened to capture.
They returned home as the market lights came on behind them.
Iris carried the camera carefully because she knew the work ahead would be quieter than the filming.
She had to choose an order that respected the people who had trusted her with their stories.
