Jonah said he understood.

He did not agree.

He had seen that particular look before, when someone studied a menu and quietly decided that hunger was cheaper than embarrassment.

He went into the kitchen and asked Marta, the cook, to prepare eggs, toast, potatoes, and two slices of bacon.

Marta raised one eyebrow.

Jonah placed his own money on the steel counter.

He told her that the meal was his.

Marta looked at the folded bills and then at Jonah’s face.

She added another slice of toast without charging him.

Jonah carried the plate to the old man’s booth.

The stranger looked up sharply.

He said he had ordered only tea.

Jonah told him the kitchen had made an extra breakfast.

The old man looked toward the grill, where Marta carefully avoided meeting his eyes.

He said he did not want charity.

Jonah sat the plate down and told him it was breakfast, not a judgment.

For a moment the old man stared at the food without touching it.

Then he asked Jonah his name.

Jonah told him.

The man repeated it slowly, as though committing it to memory.

He introduced himself as Arthur Bell.

He picked up his fork, but his hands were shaking too badly to cut the eggs.

Jonah brought a second napkin and turned away so the man could eat without being watched.

He had no idea that someone had already been searching for Arthur Bell for forty-eight hours.

He had even less idea that the brown envelope on the seat beside the old man was worth more than the diner, the building next door, and every truck in the parking lot combined.

Chapter Two: The Four Vehicles

Dennis discovered the breakfast charge seven minutes later.

He summoned Jonah to the register and held the receipt between two fingers.

He demanded to know why a full breakfast had been served to a man who had ordered tea.

Jonah explained that he had paid for it.

Dennis told him that employees were not allowed to invent promotions.

Jonah reminded him that there had been no promotion.

Dennis’s voice rose until the contractors turned around.

He accused Jonah of making the business look like a shelter.

Arthur stopped eating.

Jonah asked Dennis to lower his voice.

Dennis laughed at the request.

He said Jonah could collect his final wages after closing.

Marta emerged from the kitchen with a spatula in her hand.
