Jonah read the paragraph three times.
He called Evelyn rather than Arthur.
Evelyn asked him to send a copy and promised to identify who had authorized the offer.
Two hours later she called back.
The foundation was independent on paper, but one of its trustees was a business associate of Charles.
Evelyn said the condition was inappropriate and advised Jonah not to sign before receiving legal advice.
Jonah stared at the tuition figure while she spoke.
He had imagined Lucy attending his graduation and Marta cheering from the back row.
He had imagined finishing school without choosing between textbooks and groceries.
Now that future seemed to have a price attached to his silence.
He asked Evelyn whether every opportunity came with a hidden demand.
She said good opportunities could survive questions.
He took the letter to Hannah the following morning.
Hannah explained that the agreement could restrict his ability to speak even if the foundation never directly ordered him to lie.
She suggested a short written response declining the confidentiality condition while leaving the educational offer open for reconsideration.
Jonah wrote the response himself.
He thanked the foundation for its interest and said he could not accept support that limited truthful discussion of public matters.
He expected an angry answer.
None arrived.
At the diner, Marta noticed his mood and asked what had happened.
Jonah showed her the letter.
She read it carefully and returned it without a speech.
Then she opened the refrigerator and asked him to help count the eggs.
They counted six trays together.
When they finished, Marta said he had done the right thing.
Jonah admitted that doing the right thing had been expensive.
Marta said she knew.
She did not tell him that another offer would appear.
Her refusal to promise an easy reward made him trust her more.
Chapter Seventeen: The Day Lucy Refused to Smile
Lucy was supposed to stand beside Arthur during a community announcement about the diner.
A public relations coordinator had sent Jonah a schedule and a suggested line for Lucy to say.
The line described Arthur as the man who saved their family.
Jonah disliked it immediately.
He had asked for no publicity involving Lucy, and he had not agreed to the schedule.
Arthur learned about the arrangement when Jonah called him.
He sounded genuinely surprised.
He said his communications staff had been instructed to celebrate the reopening, not use a child as decoration.
