She told Dennis that the order had been paid in full.
Dennis ordered her back to the grill.
Jonah untied his apron.
He folded it neatly because he could not bear to leave even that small thing in a mess.
Arthur stood and asked whether his presence had caused trouble.
Jonah told him the trouble had been there long before he arrived.
He was reaching for his jacket when the first black SUV entered the parking lot.
A second vehicle followed it.
Then a third and a fourth came around the curve and stopped in a precise line outside the windows.
Every conversation in the diner died.
The vehicles were clean despite the snow and road salt.
Their windows were dark, and their drivers remained behind the wheels.
A woman in a navy coat stepped from the second vehicle carrying a leather briefcase.
Two men followed her, but she raised a hand and instructed them to wait outside.
She entered the diner alone.
Her eyes moved from the empty counter to the booth where Arthur stood beside his unfinished breakfast.
Relief crossed her face so quickly that Jonah almost missed it.
She asked whether the gentleman was Arthur Bell.
Arthur closed his eyes.
He said she had found him.
The woman introduced herself as Evelyn Shaw, an attorney from Philadelphia.
Dennis hurried forward with the bright smile he reserved for customers wearing expensive watches.
He asked whether there was some kind of emergency.
Evelyn did not answer him.
She approached Arthur and asked whether he was injured.
Arthur said he was tired.
She told him that the board had been notified of his disappearance and that several people were making decisions in his absence.
Arthur asked whether they had signed the papers.
Evelyn hesitated.
She said they were trying.
The old man’s expression changed.
He put the brown envelope on the table and flattened its creased edge.
Then he pointed at Jonah.
He told Evelyn that the young man had bought him breakfast.
Evelyn looked at Jonah’s folded apron.
She asked why he was leaving.
Dennis answered before Jonah could speak.
He said there had been an unfortunate misunderstanding involving unauthorized food.
Arthur looked at the untouched half of his breakfast.
He asked Dennis whether a paid meal could be unauthorized.
Dennis opened his mouth and found no answer.
Arthur turned back to Evelyn.
He said they would speak outside, but Jonah was coming with them.
