I arrived at eleven and waited in a small room with a table, three chairs, and a box of tissues.

Morse came in with Deputy Brooks.

They explained that they were reviewing separate allegations involving the threats against my family and the vandalism at my property.

They had obtained camera recordings from a nearby business and interviews from several people who worked for Vivian.

Morse asked me to describe the hooded figure who had thrown the brick.

I repeated that the person’s face was hidden.

He showed me still frames from the recording that displayed the figure’s shoes and jacket but not a clear identity.

I said I could not identify the person.

He seemed pleased by the answer.

“We are not asking you to guess,” he said.

He then asked whether I recognized the small white van in another image.

I identified it as similar to the van I had seen entering Vivian’s garage, but I could not confirm it was the same vehicle without a plate or distinctive mark.

Morse nodded and put the image away.

He told me investigators had identified the person suspected of sending the threatening photograph of Lucy’s window.

The individual was not Vivian.

I felt my stomach drop.

Morse said it was a former contractor who had helped Vivian move equipment between locations.

The man believed I was trying to close the operation and end his payments.

He had sent the image to frighten me into ending the reports.

I asked whether Vivian had ordered him to do it.

Morse said that question remained under investigation and that he would not offer a conclusion before the evidence supported one.

He asked whether I wished to provide an additional victim statement describing how the threats affected Lucy.

I said yes.

I described her fear of the windows, the canceled birthday party, and the nights she slept at Denise’s house.

I tried to remain calm, but my voice broke when I mentioned the drawing Lucy had made for Ruth.

Alina handed me a tissue and waited without interrupting.

I finished the statement because I wanted the costs of the threats recorded beyond the price of a broken lamp.

Before leaving, I asked whether the man was still approaching my neighborhood.

Morse said protective steps had been taken and advised me to call immediately if I observed any new contact or threats.

He would not discuss measures concerning another person’s legal status.
