CHAPTER EIGHTEEN AO: THE STORY OWEN WANTED TO TELL
Owen’s attorney sent Priya a proposed interview in which Owen would explain his version of the pool incident.
The interview was scheduled with a local broadcaster that had previously aired a short excerpt of the original clip.
Priya advised Mara that she did not have to participate.
Mara read the invitation and noticed that it described the incident as a dispute over electrical safety.
She asked the broadcaster to correct that description before she would consider any response.
The producer apologized and changed the wording.
Mara still declined the interview.
Owen appeared alone.
He said he had wanted to draw attention to Elliot’s injury and had made poor choices in the process.
He acknowledged that the cable was disconnected and that June had been following an agreed plan.
Then he claimed that Mara’s angry reaction had made the scene unpredictable.
Mara watched the interview with Lena and Priya.
Lena reached for the remote when Owen began describing himself as a misunderstood advocate.
Mara asked her to leave it on.
She wanted to hear whether he would acknowledge the threats that followed his edited video.
The interviewer asked him directly.
Owen said he regretted that people had taken the video too far.
He did not explain why he had described Mara as violent in the caption.
He did not explain why he had removed the opening footage.
When the interview ended, Priya asked Mara whether she wanted to issue a statement.
Mara said the existing record already answered the factual claims.
She refused to turn the dispute into a weekly argument between two recognizable faces.
The broadcaster later added a link to the full correction beneath its online segment.
Mara checked that the link worked and closed the page.
She did not read the comments.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN AP: THE LAST QUESTION FOR FELICIA
Felicia Grant met Rosa at a small office near the bus station.
She had arranged childcare for an hour and needed to return to work before the evening shift.
Rosa explained that Felicia could describe what she remembered without guessing who carried the metal brace.
Felicia nodded and opened a notebook.
She had written down the event date and the order of the tasks she performed after Elliot’s fall.
She remembered the sound of the brace hitting the corridor floor.
She remembered a man in a TrueStep jacket picking it up.
She did not remember his face.
Rosa asked whether anyone had told her to hide the brace.
Felicia said no.
She had been instructed to clear the hall and had seen the man moving equipment while she worked.
Rosa asked whether Felicia had any reason to believe the brace was deliberately removed from an inspection.
Felicia shook her head.
“I know it was there, and then it was gone,” she said.
“I cannot tell you why.”
Rosa thanked her for keeping the distinction clear.
Felicia asked whether the city would contact her employer.
Rosa explained the process and offered to help her request appropriate protection against retaliation.
Felicia said she wanted her name kept out of public discussion until the review team determined whether her account was needed.
Rosa agreed to convey that request.
As Felicia prepared to leave, she stopped beside the door.
“People keep asking whether I know something that will solve the case,” she said.
“I am just the person who cleaned the floor.”
Rosa answered that the people who cleaned a building often saw things other workers missed.
Felicia smiled faintly.
“Then write down what I saw,” she said.
“Please do not write down what you wish I saw.”
