Two days later, a volunteer at the recreation center was hurt while moving storage equipment.
The injury was minor, but Owen posted that the center had suffered another fall-detector failure.
He used a photograph from the previous year and described it as new.
The recreation department corrected the claim within hours.
Owen’s followers accused the department of covering up the incident.
Mara recognized the pattern.
Each correction became another opportunity for Owen to claim that somebody powerful was hiding something.
She called June.
“You need to tell him to stop,” Mara said.
June sounded shaken.
“He won’t answer me.”
“He’s using Elliot again.”
“I know.”
June admitted that she had agreed to enter Mara’s yard because Owen promised the resulting video would force a proper review.
After the video spread, he demanded that she maintain the assault allegation.
“I told him you didn’t push me,” June said.
“He said the audience had already decided.”
Mara looked out at her empty backyard.
“Then tell the audience something different.”
June was silent for a long time.
“I don’t know whether they’ll believe me.”
“That isn’t a reason to keep lying.”
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: THE PUBLIC STATEMENT
June recorded her statement at the neighborhood association office with Dev present as a witness.
She described entering Mara’s property without permission.
She explained that the cord was not connected to electricity.
She admitted that she had deliberately lowered herself to the grass after losing her footing.
She said Mara had tried to steady her rather than push her.
She did not excuse herself by blaming Owen alone.
“I agreed to a plan that put another person at risk,” she said.
“I was angry about what happened to Elliot, but anger did not make my actions honest.”
Dev uploaded the unedited statement with June’s approval.
Mara watched it from her kitchen.
The comments were divided.
Some people apologized.
Others accused June of being pressured.
Owen posted that his aunt had been manipulated.
June responded once.
“I am responsible for my own words,” she wrote.
Then she turned off her phone.
Mara’s suspended client restored her assignment the next morning.
That helped, but it did not undo the week of fear.
She still checked the patio gate twice before bed.
She still flinched when an unfamiliar car slowed near the house.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN: THE MISSING MINUTE
Luis called Mara after reviewing the original fence footage for his insurance records.
He had noticed a gap between two video segments.
His body camera automatically divided long recordings into separate files.
The police had received the first segment but not the second.
Luis brought the missing file directly to the investigating officer.
It showed Owen leaving the yard after the ambulance arrived.
June was already in the ambulance.
Owen stood beside the pool and spoke into his phone.
“The fall was good,” he said.
“The homeowner didn’t react the way we expected, but we can cut around that.”
He listened for a moment.
Then he added, “Don’t send the invoice to TrueStep this time.”
The recording did not reveal who was on the other end of the call.
It did reveal that Owen had expected a particular reaction from Mara.
It also suggested that somebody had commissioned the confrontation.
The officer asked Luis to preserve the original files and metadata.
Mara listened to the call once.
She thought of June’s injured pride and Elliot’s years of lost work.
Someone had turned both into material for a performance.
The question was whether Owen had done it alone.
