PART EIGHT: THE TRUTH AFTER THE RETURN

Chapter 64: What Eli Remembered

Eli gave his account to investigators over several interviews rather than one exhausting session.
He said Malcolm and Calvin confronted him about the payroll evidence after the party.
When he refused to surrender the originals, Calvin locked him inside the service chamber.
Eli found the passage behind a maintenance panel and tried to reach Fox Creek.
He slipped in the dark and injured his wrist and head.
Calvin found him near the pump station and took him to a clinic under a false name.
Eli said he was confused and frightened after the injury.
He also described being told that his family would be prosecuted if he contacted them.
Malcolm promised that the false accusations would disappear if Eli stayed away until the financial records were destroyed.
As months passed, Calvin expanded the threats and arranged housing under false names.
Eli worked whenever possible and saved money secretly.
He tried several times to contact his family, but Calvin intercepted messages or used new threats to frighten him back into silence.
His account explained the notebook entries, the medical visit, and the repeated sightings.
It did not excuse the people who had controlled him.

Chapter 65: The Years Between Us

Eli and I spent our first evening together sorting through ordinary family photographs.
He recognized neighbors who had moved away, complained about how badly I used to cut my hair, and laughed at a picture of our father asleep in a lawn chair.
Then he grew quiet when he saw the photograph from the bandstand.
“I saw Dad that day,” he said.
“I know.”
“I wanted to run to him.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Eli looked toward the window.
“Calvin told me he had records that could put you both in prison.”
“They were lies.”
“I know that now.”
He rubbed his wrist, where an old scar crossed the joint.
“Back then, I didn’t know what was real anymore.”
I took his hand.
“You don’t have to prove anything tonight.”
For the first time since he returned, Eli allowed himself to rest without watching the driveway.

Chapter 66: The Charges

Investigators referred evidence concerning the foundation funds, forged documents, threats, and confinement to the appropriate prosecuting authorities.
Calvin faced several criminal charges arising from the documented financial conduct and later coercive acts.
Vivian faced proceedings connected to her destruction of my camera and her conduct toward Claire, with further questions about her participation in the concealment.
The authorities also reviewed Malcolm’s role, although his death meant he could not answer accusations in court.
Vega cautioned me that some allegations might never become charges and that courtroom findings could differ from our understanding of events.
I appreciated her honesty.
I had seen what happened when people treated suspicion as a verdict.
Eli was offered independent legal advice and support services as he adjusted to life outside the arrangements that had controlled him.
Claire chose to move to another town and begin training for a new job.
Grace returned to Oregon after giving her statement, but she promised to visit when Eli was ready.
The investigation did not repair everyone overnight.
It finally allowed them to make decisions without Calvin deciding what they were permitted to know.
