Chapter 17: The Storage Key

Vega obtained records showing that the railway holding company still maintained an underground storage lease beneath the former maintenance building.
The property had been inspected periodically, although its listed use was inactive archival storage.
A locksmith hired by the county had reported an unusual secondary latch on one internal door.
The location matched the number seven in my father’s photograph.
Vega would not tell me when a search might occur, but she confirmed that investigators were preserving the site’s records.
Two days later, Claire Danner asked through her advocate whether she could speak to me in a supervised setting.
I agreed immediately.
We met in a county conference room with Vega present.
Claire wore a green cardigan and kept both hands wrapped around a paper cup.

“I didn’t know Eli,” she began.
“I was fourteen when I first heard his name.”
She said her mother worked for Vivian as a housekeeper several years after Eli vanished.
When her mother became ill, Vivian offered Claire a room and wages for helping around the property.
The arrangement began peacefully.
Then Claire discovered that Vivian had been receiving sealed packages for Calvin and a man she called Jonah.
The packages arrived after dark, and Vivian insisted they remain unopened.
“Why did you stay?” I asked.
Claire looked at the cup.
“I thought I had nowhere else to go.”
She explained that Vivian gradually controlled her transportation and threatened to accuse her of theft if she tried to leave.
The situation worsened when Claire overheard Calvin arguing about a locked chamber beneath the railway yard.

“They called it the archive,” she said.
“But nothing about it sounded like ordinary records.”

Chapter 18: Jonah’s Real Name

Claire had seen Jonah three times before the night of the camera recording.
He wore Eli’s jacket during one visit and carried an old photograph of my family in his glove compartment.
She believed he was studying how Eli looked.
“Did he resemble my brother?” I asked.
“A little.”
“How much?”
“Enough in the dark if someone wanted to believe it.”
Claire said Jonah was actually a man named Jonah Pike, who worked in theatrical prosthetics and had been hired to perform at a private event.
Calvin allegedly asked him to impersonate Eli at the railway site after receiving anonymous messages about the missing boy.
“Why would they do that?” Vega asked.
Claire shook her head.
“They wanted somebody to see him.”
The answer frightened me more than I expected.
For years, my father had followed sightings he could never verify.
What if some of those sightings were manufactured to keep him chasing the wrong direction?
Claire said Vivian opposed the impersonation at first, then agreed after Calvin showed her a document.
She never saw what the document contained.
“He told her he could prove she was there the night Eli disappeared,” Claire said.
Vega leaned forward.
“Where was there?”
“At the railway door.”
