Tyler Stanhope her son

He had just turned and already crashed his mother s SUV into two mailboxes

He looked at that red fender the way a kid looks at a birthday present

Something tightened in my gut

Before bed I installed two cameras

Friday I drove hours to Fort Benning for the memorial service of an old friend

I planned for weeks

Eileen Parrish my neighbor promised to watch the house

I checked the cameras tightened the cover and left

Saturday afternoon my phone rang

It was Eileen

Her voice was shaking

She said Jack they took Laura s car I pulled over and opened the doorbell app

The footage hit me like a punch

A flatbed truck in my driveway

Two men cutting the cover

And in the middle of it arms crossed directing like it was a movie set Meredith Stanhope

I turned up the volume

She said Perfect

Tyler s going to lose his mind That s when I understood

This was not a violation

This was theft

I called the police from the shoulder of the highway

They put me through to Captain Rick Palmer

He sounded bored

Civil matter He said

HOA authority Then he added that Meredith was family and I shouldn t make trouble

Her husband s brother

I hung up

Then I made one more call

It lasted less than a minute

The voice on the other end went silent then said Don t touch anything Jack

I m on my way I got home at that night

My driveway was empty

Jack s stands knocked over

The orange tag lying in the gutter

Eileen met me on the lawn crying

She said the truck never went toward any impound lot

It turned left toward Magnolia Court

I walked across to the house with the white columns and rang the bell

Meredith opened the door holding a glass of iced tea

I asked her where Laura s car was

She smiled and said it was impounded for unpaid fines

I told her the car had no brakes that nobody could drive it that it must stay parked

She waved her hand and said it sounded like an excuse

Then she shut the door in my face

And from somewhere upstairs I heard a boy laugh

I found the tow driver at a gas station at eleven

Lenny Drosty orange cap sweating through his coveralls
