He pulled out his handcuffs and said Turn around Jack

You re under arrest for reckless endangerment I didn t resist

I just said Captain before you put those on me look at the car

Check the brake pedal

Check the master cylinder

Check the lines Officer Bennett hesitated

Then he knelt by the wreck with his flashlight

When he stood up his face had gone gray

Captain he said the brake lines are disconnected and somebody tore the warning tag off the wheel I held up my phone and pressed play

The doorbell footage filled the screen

The flatbed the cut cover and Meredith s voice clear as a bell

Perfect

Tyler s going to lose his mind The street went dead quiet

Eileen pulled out her own phone and said I filmed her this morning too Meredith s face went white then red

She said it was fake AI edited

Then a small voice spoke from the steps

Mom stop Tyler had tears running down his face

He said there was a tag on the wheel when I got in and you told me to rip it off

You said the guy was just trying to scare us

You said it d be fine

Meredith whispered his name like a threat

Palmer said Quiet son But it was too late

Everyone had heard

Palmer ignored every word

He grabbed my arm twisted behind my back and snapped the first cuff on

Meredith smiled for the first time

Take him in she told him

And as the metal bit into my wrist I heard something at the end of the street

Tires a lot of them

And I thought Finally Harold Three black and white SUVs swung around the corner with their lights flashing

The whole street fell silent

Police Chief Harold Mitchell stepped out tall silver haired in a depressed dress uniform

Palmer froze one cuff still on my wrist

Mitchell looked at Palmer then at me then at the metal on my hand

His jaw tightened

Captain he said very quietly take that off him Palmer fumbled with the key

The cuff dropped to the pavement

Then the chief stood in front of me squared his shoulders and raised his right hand to his brow in a crisp salute

Every officer on that street did the same

Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Jack Dunlap he said loud enough for the whole street Sir I apologize for what happened here Meredith s mouth fell open and nobody in Cedar Ridge breathed
