Someone had written a short sentence on the back in blue ink

The sentence claimed that the car had been promised to another buyer before Laura died

My stomach tightened as I examined the picture

I recognized the car show because Laura wore the yellow scarf I had bought her that spring

I also recognized the man standing partly outside the frame

He was the restoration broker whose business card I had mentioned to Dana

I placed the photograph in a clean envelope and called her immediately

She asked me not to handle it further and arranged for a technician to collect it

When she arrived I told her Laura had never agreed to sell the Mustang

She asked whether I had any written agreement supporting my ownership

I showed her the title and the receipts from years of restoration work

The title had been transferred into my name after Lauras death through the proper estate process

Dana examined the paperwork and said the photograph alone did not establish any competing claim

I asked why someone would send it now

She said she could not answer without learning who had sent it

Her restraint frustrated me but I understood why it mattered

That night I opened the wooden box where Laura kept photographs from our road trips

I found the original picture from the same car show tucked behind a map of Tennessee

The wider image showed the broker leaning toward Laura while she shook her head

I remembered the conversation at last

He had offered to buy the car before we finished restoring it

Laura had laughed and told him that some things were not for sale

The photographer had captured the moment without either of us noticing

I sat at the kitchen table holding the picture until the room grew dark

I had spent weeks defending the Mustang as property and evidence

The photograph reminded me that Laura had already defended it once with nothing more than a clear answer

I made a copy for Dana and returned the original to its place in the box

The next morning I went into the garage and finished installing the final brake line

I bled the system carefully and inspected every connection twice

The car remained on stands while I tested the pedal and checked for leaks

I refused to hurry the work simply because I wanted to hear the engine again
