The red paint caught the morning sun
I thought the worst part might finally be behind us
Then the doorbell rang
Tyler stood on the porch holding a sealed cardboard box
He said his mother had asked him to throw it away
He said he had opened it and found something with Lauras name on it
I did not invite him inside until he explained where the box had come from
He told me it had been in a locked cabinet at his mothers house
He said the cabinet had been cleared after the association demanded the return of its records
I asked whether he had removed the box without permission
He nodded
I told him that taking evidence from someone elses home could create serious problems
He said he knew
He looked down at the box and said he could not leave it in the trash
I asked him to put it on the porch without opening it further
Then I called Marcus
Tyler waited while I explained the situation
He did not try to leave
When the investigator arrived Tyler described the cabinet and the instructions his mother had given him
Marcus documented the box and took it into custody
Before he carried it away he showed me the label visible through a clear plastic sleeve
The label contained Lauras name and the address of our house
My knees felt weak
I asked why Meredith would have kept a file about my wife
Marcus said he did not know
He promised that any lawful disclosure would come through the proper process
After the car left Tyler stood beside my porch steps
He said his mother had told him Laura was careless and that the Mustang had been abandoned
He said he had believed the story because it made getting the car seem fair
I told him that believing a convenient story did not make it true
He said he understood that now
I asked whether he had told Marcus everything he knew
He said he had
Then he looked toward the garage and asked whether I had driven the Mustang yet
I said I had completed a test drive
He smiled faintly
He said he was glad the brakes worked
I watched him leave with the uncomfortable knowledge that he was both responsible for his choices and still learning how much his mother had hidden
That evening I called Evelyn
