He wouldn t talk until I showed him the video

Then he pulled out a crumpled receipt

Delivery address fourteen Magnolia Court

That s Meredith s house not an impound lot

Undersold to in black ink M

Stanhope

Price for a car worth

A secret lien sale a fake auction date and a signature at the bottom Bruce Kimball HOA treasurer

I called Bruce

No answer

I called again

Finally he picked up and whispered Jack I never signed that

Please don t tell her I called Then the line went dead

At in the morning I walked back to her Magnolia Court praying I was wrong

I wasn t

Laura s Mustang sat in the Stanhope s driveway with a giant blue bow on the hood

Balloons a cake Meredith filming on her phone while Tyler slid behind the wheel grinning

I started running

I shouted that it had no brakes

She never even turned her head

The engine caught with that deep American rumble Laura loved

Tyler laughed dropped into drive and rolled down the slope of the driveway

Then I saw his face change

His foot slammed the pedal and the pedal went straight to the floor

The Mustang jumped a curb tore through the hedges scattered the patio furniture and hit the stone steps with a sound I will never forget

Then silence

I got to the boy first

He was awake shaking his wrist bent the wrong way and a small cut above his eyebrow

I told him to stay still and keep breathing

Neighbors poured out of their houses

Someone called and then Meredith got there

She didn t ask whether her son was alive

She shoved me away from him and screamed that I d killed him

The ambulance arrived in minutes

While the paramedic cleaned Tyler s wrist Meredith turned on me her finger pointing at my chest like a loaded gun

You gave my son a death trap She shrieked

I looked at the wreck of my wife s car and I heard myself shout the only thing I could You took my car in front of everyone Captain Palmer arrived in under minutes which was suspicious by itself with Officer Cody Bennett right behind him

Meredith ran to them like they were her private army

She told them I had lured her son into a death trap and demanded my arrest

Palmer didn t ask a single question
