She did not want money for it
She wanted to bring it back to her father while he could still recognize it
I told her I hoped she would get that chance
She looked down at the photograph and said hope had become expensive
I had no answer that could make her feel better
After the meeting Evelyn asked whether I could accompany her to the storage facility
Investigators had authorized an inspection of Samuels coupe with a representative present
I agreed and called Peter to ask whether he could send someone who understood older vehicles
Celia volunteered
We met at the warehouse on a bright Saturday morning
The gate that had once seemed impenetrable stood open beneath the watch of county personnel
Inside the building rows of vehicles waited under fluorescent lights
Some had flat tires
Others were covered with dust and handwritten inventory tags
Evelyn stopped when she saw Samuels coupe
She placed one hand over her mouth
The car was smaller than I expected and painted a faded cream color
Celia walked around it without touching anything
She pointed out damage to a door handle and a cracked rear window seal
Evelyn opened the passenger door after the official gave permission
A small brass compass remained glued to the dashboard
She reached toward it and stopped
She said Samuel had bought the compass at a roadside gift shop during a trip with their father
I stood beside her while she remembered the story
She told me Samuel had always taken the wrong road on purpose when he thought the scenery might be better
The official asked whether she wanted photographs before the car was moved
Evelyn nodded
Celia documented the interior and the engine bay
She found no immediate reason to start the engine and recommended transporting it without driving
Evelyn signed the inspection record with a hand that shook
Outside the warehouse she leaned against my pickup and cried
I did not tell her to be strong
I handed her a tissue and waited
When she could speak again she said she had thought she would never see the compass
I told her that Samuel had left something of himself in that car
She said that was exactly why losing it had hurt
