Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I thought if you were angry about him, you wouldn’t ask what we were doing.”
Mark leaned back.
That was the first answer that explained the anniversary night.
She had turned their marriage into a fight about jealousy to hide a financial betrayal.
He thought about the cake, the dress, and the reservation beside the lake.
He had spent that evening trying to understand why his wife wanted to hurt him.
She had been trying to keep him from asking the right question.
Mark stood.
Rachel looked up at him.
“I need a moment.”
He walked to the hallway and stopped beside a window overlooking the parking lot.
He did not cry until he was alone.
He pressed one hand against the cool glass and let the grief pass through him without making a sound.
When he returned, Vanessa was staring at the empty chair.
Mark sat down but did not take her hand.
“I can listen to the truth, but I cannot promise what happens after it.”
Vanessa nodded.
For once, she did not ask him to reassure her.
THE OTHER MERCER
The meeting had barely ended when Rachel received a message from Evelyn Price.
The message concerned Owen Mercer, the younger man who had accompanied Vanessa to the storage facility.
Owen was Daniel’s younger brother.
He had worked as a warehouse supervisor for Westbridge until resigning the previous month.
Evelyn said Owen had contacted the lender with information about the missing inventory.
Rachel told Mark that they should wait for verified records rather than assume Owen was either innocent or guilty.
Mark agreed.
He had already learned how easily a convincing appearance could be manufactured.
That evening, Mark received a letter forwarded through Rachel.
Owen had written it before speaking with investigators.
He said Daniel had asked him to sign receiving reports for equipment that never arrived.
Owen refused after discovering that several purchase orders were duplicates.
He claimed Vanessa had visited the warehouse because she wanted to see the equipment herself.
According to Owen, she had argued with Daniel when she found the shelves nearly empty.
The letter did not excuse Vanessa’s earlier signature.
It did explain why she had looked frightened outside the storage office.
Owen also described a locked cabinet containing contracts, blank company checks, and copies of customer identification documents.
He had not opened the cabinet.
He had photographed its exterior because Daniel ordered him to move it into the storage unit.
Mark read the letter while Claire washed dishes.
He noticed that Owen had included the date of his resignation and the name of a colleague who witnessed the argument.
