The picture had been taken at a local chamber of commerce event.

Someone had cropped out Luis and the mayor.

Underneath the photograph was a quotation about integrity and long term partnerships.

Mark had never said those words.

He called Rachel.

“They used my face.”

Rachel asked him to forward the brochure and preserve the email.

Mark did so immediately.

He looked at the photograph one more time before closing the file.

For the first time, he understood that his identity had been used as part of the product Daniel was selling.

THE FIRST REAL ANSWER

Vanessa finally asked to meet Mark through their attorneys.

The meeting took place in a conference room at a neutral office building.

Mark arrived with Rachel.

Vanessa came with a lawyer named Helen Brooks.

She wore a gray sweater instead of the red dress.

Her hair was tied back, and she kept her hands folded on the table.

For several seconds, neither spouse spoke.

Helen explained that Vanessa wanted to make a statement about the company and the documents.

Rachel asked whether the statement was voluntary and whether Vanessa understood its possible consequences.

Helen confirmed that they had discussed those matters.

Vanessa looked directly at Mark.

“I told myself I was helping us.”

Mark did not interrupt.

“Daniel said we could build something that would let you sell the shop and finally rest.”

Mark felt a flash of anger.

He had never asked Vanessa to find a way for him to retire.

He had asked her to respect the work he loved.

Vanessa continued.

“The first application was rejected because our company was new.”

She glanced at Helen before speaking again.

“Daniel said the bank would accept a guarantee if we had someone with established credit.”

Mark waited.

“I gave him copies of your old business records.”

The words landed harder than the insults from their anniversary night.

Rachel asked whether Vanessa had personally signed Mark’s name.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

The room became very quiet.

Mark looked at the grain of the wooden table.

He had imagined this answer for days.

Hearing it aloud did not make him feel prepared.

Vanessa began to explain that Daniel had promised to replace the guarantee once the company earned money.

Rachel asked her to stop until Helen had confirmed the scope of the statement.

Helen spoke privately with Vanessa for several minutes.

When the meeting resumed, Vanessa said she understood that a promise to fix something later did not make the original act acceptable.

Mark finally spoke.

“Why did you threaten divorce when I asked about Daniel?”
