Claire read the sentence aloud and then fell silent.
Mark looked toward the workshop windows, where afternoon sunlight crossed the floor.
He had spent months defending the lane as a legal right.
The letter reminded him why the right mattered.
It protected work, continuity, and the choices made by people who had built something with their hands.
Claire asked whether he wanted the letter framed.
Mark said he would rather keep it in the records until the case ended.
Then he laughed at himself for sounding exactly like Rachel.
Claire laughed too, and for a moment they were simply siblings in an old building full of family memories.
THE MEETING DANIEL DID NOT EXPECT
Daniel’s attorney requested another settlement conference after the investor suspended the project’s funding.
Rachel advised Mark that attending could be useful if the discussion remained focused on documented proposals.
Mark agreed on the condition that the meeting not include Vanessa.
He wanted his marriage handled separately from the property dispute.
The conference took place in a neutral office near the courthouse.
Daniel arrived with a lawyer and a consultant Mark had never met.
His expensive jacket was neatly pressed, but he looked exhausted.
Daniel opened by saying the development could still benefit the neighborhood if everyone stopped fighting.
Mark replied that he had never objected to lawful development on land the developer actually controlled.
He objected to documents that claimed rights he had not granted.
Daniel’s attorney proposed a revised easement with compensation, maintenance provisions, and limits on commercial traffic.
Rachel asked whether the offer included withdrawal of every disputed filing.
The attorney said that could be discussed.
Mark asked whether Daniel would also correct the project’s financial representations to investors.
Daniel stared at him across the table.
He said Mark was trying to destroy a business over a driveway.
Mark answered that the driveway had not forged his name or moved money through an unrelated company.
Rachel immediately reminded everyone that the financial review remained incomplete.
She said the meeting should not turn disputed allegations into declarations of guilt.
Daniel looked away.
His consultant asked for a private break, and the two men left the room.
Mark remained seated while Rachel reviewed her notes.
She asked whether he would consider a properly documented easement if the compensation were fair.
Mark thought about Luis and the trucks that came through the lane every morning.
He said the business could not function if another company controlled the only practical loading route.
Rachel nodded and said that was a legitimate commercial position.
When Daniel returned, his attorney offered a larger payment.
