“Did Daniel tell you about the original deed?”

Mark said he did not know what Arthur meant.

Arthur immediately changed the subject.

He said the old dispute with Mark’s father had been settled long ago.

Then he ended the call.

Mark wrote down the exact words before he could forget them.

He called Rachel and repeated the conversation without adding his own theory.

Rachel asked whether Arthur had threatened him.

Mark said he had not.

She advised him not to call Arthur again.

That evening Claire searched their father’s papers for a deed.

She found a property description for the shop and an older agreement concerning an adjoining strip of land.

The agreement gave their father’s business a recorded right to use a narrow service lane for deliveries.

Mark had used the lane for years without thinking about its legal history.

The document carried Arthur’s name as a witness.

Claire found another page indicating that their father had purchased Arthur’s interest in the property when the partnership ended.

The final recorded deed was missing from the folder.

Mark called Rachel again.

She told him that public land records could establish what had actually been recorded.

She would obtain certified copies rather than rely on old paperwork found in a desk.

Mark hung up and looked at Claire.

“Why would Daniel care about the lane?” he asked.

Claire shook her head.

She did not know.

Neither of them wanted to invent an answer.

THE MEETING

Vanessa arrived at Rachel’s office wearing a plain gray sweater and carrying a thick folder.

Her attorney Helen walked beside her.

Mark noticed that Vanessa had stopped wearing her wedding ring.

He did not know whether she had removed it that morning or weeks earlier.

They sat across from each other at a conference table that felt much larger than it was.

Helen explained that Vanessa was prepared to answer questions within the scope of the agreed meeting.

Rachel confirmed that the conversation would be documented.

Vanessa looked at Mark before anyone spoke.

“I know I hurt you,” she said.

Mark waited.

She lowered her eyes.

“I told myself that Daniel was helping us,” she continued.

“He kept saying your shop was worth more than you realized.”

Mark asked when Daniel had first approached her about the business.

Vanessa said they had reconnected at a fundraiser nearly a year earlier.

Daniel told her he was arranging financing for a regional equipment supplier.

He claimed that a successful deal would allow Mark to expand the shop without taking on new debt.

Vanessa admitted that she had supplied Daniel with financial statements copied from Mark’s home office.
