Ethan did not answer.
Her silence became the answer instead.
He felt a coldness move through his chest.
The affair was no longer only emotional or physical.
Samantha had quietly taken nearly twelve thousand dollars from an account they used for emergencies and home repairs.
She had transferred it to her ex-boyfriend.
“Why?” Ethan asked.
“His father’s medical expenses left him in a mess.”
“His father had insurance.”
Samantha looked startled.
“Dylan told you that too?”
“No.”
Ethan had met Dylan’s father once, years earlier, at a mutual friend’s wedding.
The man had been a retired state employee with a pension and health coverage.
That did not mean there were no expenses.
It did mean Samantha’s explanation deserved scrutiny.
“What was the money actually for?” Ethan asked.
Samantha stood.
“I just told you.”
“No.”
“You gave me a vague story.”
“You do not get to cross-examine me.”
Ethan’s voice stayed low.
“You took almost twelve thousand dollars from our savings and gave it to the man you slept with last night.”
Samantha flinched.
“You absolutely owe me an explanation.”
“He needed help.”
“Why could he not borrow from a bank?”
“He had credit problems.”
“Why did he have credit problems?”
“I do not know.”
“You gave him twelve thousand dollars without knowing?”
“It was not all at once.”
“That makes it worse.”
Samantha rubbed her forehead.
“I was going to put it back.”
“With what money?”
“My bonus.”
“Your bonus is in December.”
“I know.”
“It is October.”
“I know what month it is.”
Ethan stood.
“Did he ask you for it?”
Samantha hesitated again.
“Yes.”
“Did he know it came from our joint savings?”
“No.”
That answer came too fast.
Ethan caught it.
Samantha caught him catching it.
“He thought it was mine,” she added.
“It was partly yours.”
Ethan paused.
“It was also partly mine.”
“I know.”
“Did you tell him I knew?”
“No.”
“Did you tell him our marriage was ending when you gave him the money?”
Samantha looked down.
Ethan felt another piece lock into place.
He picked up his phone.
“Do not call him,” Samantha said.
Ethan looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because this is between us.”
“No.”
“Ethan.”
“You made him part of our finances.”
“I will get the money back.”
“When?”
“I will call him.”
“No.”
Samantha’s eyes widened.
Ethan put his phone in his pocket.
“My lawyer will handle any financial request.”
“You are going to send a lawyer after Dylan?”
“If marital funds were transferred under false pretenses, my lawyer will decide what needs to happen.”
