Ethan sat down.

“What email chain?”

“Messages between Samantha and Dylan discussing the investment.”

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

“Why would he send those?”

“He appears to be trying to establish that he believed she had authority to invest the money.”

“Does it establish that?”

“It establishes that Samantha told him you approved.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Laura continued.

“There is one message I need you to know about.”

“What does it say?”

“I will paraphrase rather than read it.”

“Okay.”

“In July, Dylan asked whether you were comfortable with the amount.”

“Samantha replied that you did not need to know every detail because you had your own business accounts.”

Ethan said nothing.

Laura continued.

“She wrote that you would complain if you found out, but you would not do anything permanent because you cared too much about keeping the marriage intact.”

Ethan stared at his untouched coffee.

The sentence echoed Clare’s version of Samantha’s comments.

It was not a joke made once after wine.

It was a belief Samantha had repeated in different rooms to different people.

Ethan’s stability had become part of her risk calculation.

“What else?” he asked.

“There is an August exchange about the home equity line.”

Ethan’s hand tightened around the phone.

“She told Dylan she was looking into it.”

“Did he encourage her?”

“He told her not to do anything requiring your signature without speaking to you.”

Ethan was surprised.

“That helps him.”

“Yes.”

“Does it hurt Samantha?”

Laura paused.

“I would not frame it that way.”

“It shows she knew the investment had reached a point where your involvement might be legally necessary.”

“She chose not to involve you.”

Ethan stood and paced slowly.

“Is there anything illegal?”

“I am not making that conclusion from these documents.”

“She was a joint owner of the savings account.”

“She could generally withdraw funds.”

“The family-law issue is how the money is characterized and accounted for.”

“The business agreement creates additional questions.”

Ethan appreciated Laura’s refusal to dramatize.

He had enough drama already.

“What do we do?”

“We document.”

“We request complete records.”

“We decide whether you want to pursue separation or attempt reconciliation.”

“And we do not confuse punishment with protection.”

Ethan stopped pacing.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you have enough information to be furious.”

“It does not mean every aggressive legal step is useful.”

Ethan nodded even though she could not see him.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Laura’s tone softened slightly.

“Good.”

“There is one more thing.”

Ethan waited.

“Dylan’s attorney contacted me this morning.”
