Ethan had seen her do that during arguments before.

She liked to turn her back when she needed time to rearrange a story.

He waited.

She finally spoke without facing him.

“Dylan and I had history.”

“I know.”

“You know how serious we were before you and I met.”

“I know.”

“He contacted me because his father died.”

“I know his father died.”

Samantha turned around.

“How do you know that?”

Ethan answered carefully.

“Because Dylan told me.”

Samantha stopped breathing for a moment.

Ethan saw it happen.

“And Dylan is not the only person I spoke to yesterday,” he said.

The sentence seemed to empty the room.

Samantha gripped the edge of the sink.

“You spoke to Dylan?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“At five forty this morning.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You called him?”

“He called me.”

Samantha’s face changed so quickly that Ethan understood something before she said another word.

She had not expected Dylan to cooperate.

She had not expected Dylan to feel guilty.

Most of all, she had not expected Dylan to have his own version of the story.

“What did he say?” Samantha asked.

Ethan stood.

For the first time since she walked into the house, Samantha took a step backward.

Ethan did not move toward her.

He walked past her to the coffee maker and poured the cold coffee into the sink.

He rinsed the mug.

He set it carefully in the drying rack.

That ordinary movement seemed to bother Samantha more than shouting would have.

“What did Dylan say?” she asked again.

Ethan turned around.

“He said last night was not the first time you met him.”

Samantha’s eyes closed.

Only for a second.

That second was enough.

Ethan felt something inside him finally break cleanly.

There was no explosion.

There was no dramatic wave of rage.

There was only the quiet disappearance of doubt.

Dylan had told the truth.

Samantha had met him before.

Not in a hotel.

Not overnight.

Not physically, according to Dylan.

But they had met for coffee six weeks earlier.

They had met for drinks three weeks after that.

They had sat in Dylan’s car for almost two hours after the second meeting.

Dylan claimed Samantha talked about leaving Ethan.

She complained that Ethan had become emotionally distant.

She said he cared more about work than marriage.

She said she sometimes wondered what her life would have looked like if she had stayed with Dylan.

Then, according to Dylan, Samantha changed the story whenever he asked whether she actually intended to leave.

She said Ethan would never agree to a clean separation.
