“I know that makes no sense,” she said.
“It makes sense.”
She looked surprised.
Ethan continued.
“I just do not like what it means.”
“What does it mean?”
“That loving me did not stop you.”
Samantha closed her eyes.
“No.”
Ethan asked the fifth question.
“What happens the next time your life feels boring?”
Samantha opened her eyes.
She had no immediate answer.
Ethan waited.
Finally, she said, “I learn how to be honest before I become entitled to escape.”
He studied her.
“That sounds like therapy language.”
“It probably is.”
“At least it is better than anything.”
Samantha gave a sad smile.
“I do not know yet, Ethan.”
“That is the real answer.”
“I do not know what guarantees I can give you.”
“I can tell you I never want to do this again.”
“I can tell you I am ashamed.”
“I can tell you I understand now that secrecy became addictive because every secret let me postpone a difficult conversation.”
“But I cannot prove in a coffee shop that I will be different forever.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“That is the first answer today that makes me feel safer.”
Samantha looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because you did not promise something impossible just to keep me.”
They stayed for another hour.
They did not discuss reconciliation directly.
They discussed the house.
They discussed work.
They discussed whether Samantha should tell mutual friends anything.
Ethan asked her not to recruit people into taking sides.
She agreed.
Before they left, Samantha reached into her bag.
She removed a small velvet box.
Inside was the gold bracelet.
“I do not want to keep this right now,” she said.
Ethan looked at it.
“You can.”
“It feels dishonest.”
“It was a gift.”
“It came from a night when you asked if I was happy and I lied.”
Ethan closed the box.
“That does not make the gift dishonest.”
Samantha looked at him.
“It makes my answer dishonest.”
He slid the box back toward her.
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
“Because if we end, I do not want every good thing we had to become evidence in a case against the past.”
Samantha stared at him with tears in her eyes.
Ethan stood.
“I am not ready to forgive you.”
“I know.”
“I am not ready to come home.”
“I know.”
“But I am also not going to pretend eleven years were fake because six months were dishonest.”
Samantha nodded.
For once, she did not ask for more.
They left separately.
Three weeks passed before Ethan and Samantha sat in the same room with a marriage counselor.
